Henry II was born as the second son of the French royal couple.
In the years 1526–1530 he was a hostage at the Madrid court of Emperor Charles V.
In 1533 he married Catherine de Medici. He was 14 at the time.
Just a year after their marriage, Henry began an affair with Diana de Poitiers,
his senior, who would become the most influential person in France during Henry’s reign.
Henry II was a man of good stature and great physical strength. He loved tournaments and wars.
He was a gloomy and taciturn ruler. He was called “king of lead”.
Upon the death of his elder brother Francis in 1536,
Henry inherited the title of Duke of Brittany and became Dauphin of France.
On March 31, 1547, after the death of his father, he became King of France.
